NETFLIX REVIEW - THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER

I have always been a fan of Edgar Allen Poe’s writing since elementary school. I’m a fan when classics get retold in a modern way while still honoring the grit they were created. That’s why when I saw the trailer for The Fall of the House of Usher.

With my busy schedule I rarely have time to sit down and enjoy a good series. But when I do, I try to look at what’s trending to take out the guess work. One show that caught my eye was Fall of the House of Usher, which is a modern take off the work of Edgar Allen Poe. The premise is of a very affluent family that is plagued by a string of murders of both legitimate and illegitimate children of the patriarch of the family Roderick Usher.

The first episode was truly captivating. From the razor sharp script, to the very macabre and artfully done cinematography, this series started off with a bang. Because I hate spoilers I will not be going in depth into what happens, because each episode is a development to the finale.

That is all to say, I feel that the show fell somewhat flat, with some of the characters being a little too modern for my liking, and at times it seemed very evident they were trying to be more provocative than substancial. This is not bashing the series itself, but how entertainment is now, which focuses more on social media buzz than actual substance.

Overall the series was entertaining, but I wish it kept the same artistic nature it had the first episode, that was a great cinematic visualization of Edgar Allen Poe’s work.
