FOOD SPOTLIGHT: HUMMUS ALTERNATIVE

The goal is to find that other bean that has a very similar flavor as the original bean of chick pea…Hummus.

It’s Black Beans, and Cannellini Beans also known as White Kidney Beans. Both beans have a sweet mild flavor as the Chick Peas. This flavor will translate very similarly to Hummus when it’s whipped into dip form.

Black Beans are an amazing source of protein and fiber. This bean has no cholesterol so it’s a good support of our heart health. And it is packed with antioxidants.

Cannellini Bean, or White Kidney Bean is also loaded with fiber, and a good source of protein. Which aids to control the blood sugar. It has folate, magnesium, and iron.

Enjoy either, or both of these healthy substitutes.

Fava beans Hummus-

A great alternative to chickpea hummus is fava beans due to its starchy texture similar to that of chickpeas.

Take 2 cups of fava beans or two cans of fava beans, and for the the dry ones, soak overnight.

Once soaked boil for a couple hours until they are soft enough to mash easily with a spoon. In a bowl take a cup of tahini and gradually incorporate it into the fava beans, mashing until you get the desired consistency and flavor. Take a half cup of lemon juice with garlic and salt and also put into the tahini and fava bean mixture until evenly mashed. Serve hot or room temperature as a dip or spread.
