ALIA AL-SENUSSI- LIBYAN PRINCESS & VIP REPRESENTATIVE FOR ART BASEL
Alia Al-Senussi is a Doctor (PhD from SOAS University of London), VIP Representative for Art Basel and a champion of diversity. Along with being multi-hyphenated and incredibly kind, Alia just happens to be a Libyan Princess. Hair flip. So grateful Alia answered our questions! A wonderful way to close out 2022. Enjoy this interview!
How would you introduce yourself to people who are unaware of you?
I’m a cultural strategist who is passionate about the art world.
You have the coolest job! You are VIP Representative for Art Basel and you actively promote Middle Eastern art on a global level to name a couple. What do you love most about sharing Middle Eastern Art with the world? How do you view art as a unifier?
Connecting with people on a cultural level is key to breaking down prejudices and barriers, and to understanding their belief systems, their joys, their traumas and who they really are.
When you’re in work mode & you have late nights etc. what is your favorite “go-to snack”?
I love comfort food in all forms, chicken+rice+cucumber/tomato salad is my favorite Sunday night meal at home.
What is your favorite beauty staple? Ex- bold lip, no-makeup look etc
I’ll never forget sitting next to Marlene Dumas’s daughter at the lunch celebrating her Tate show, and getting an amazing lesson in eyebrow pencil – a favorite ever since. Aquaphor is also always in every bag!
Last question! Favorite way to get organized and celebrate for the year ahead?
I always think the beginning of the school year is my new year where I have time in London and in Saudi planning the seasons ahead, and my favorite way to celebrate is Art Basel Hong Kong week. Any time I spend in San Diego is what I call my mental health time and art world social detox.
